Pernilla epitomises Mathsson’s pursuit of enhanced ergonomics, stemming from his exploration of the “mechanics of sitting” in the 1930s – an experiment Mathsson conducted which involved him sitting on a snowdrift, observing the imprint his body made.

With its distinctive ergonomic design and low centre of gravity, the Pernilla chair is widely regarded as a pivotal piece in early Swedish modernist movement.

Mathsson’s choice of materials, such as woven hemp for the seat and solid beech and bentwood for the frame, not only ensures comfort but also adds a striking visual appeal.
