Annika Table by Bruno Mathsson.
The versatile Annika table range was designed by Bruno Mathsson for Karl Mathsson in 1936, Sweden. This relaxed dining/coffee table is in Masur birch with laminated birch legs.
Bruno Mathsson came from a long line of cabinet makers. Although he trained at his father’s firm, he took a distinctly different path pursuing modernism over classicism. Bruno Mathsson’s work was strongly influenced by Marcel Breuer and Alvar Aalto. The bent plywood designs by Breuer for Isokon demonstrated that furniture could be created without the use of a heavy upholstery. Mathsson’s theory of the ‘sitting curve’ reflects the Breuer Longchair. The work of Aalto proved to Mathsson that international recognition and demand was possible. His organic forms were highly influential across the world.
Mathsson’s extensive seating, table and storage designs, have marked his career as being one of the great furniture designers of modern times. Much of his work has been in continuous production and are key elements in museum collections worldwide.
This table bears the branded mark ‘Firma Karl Mathsson Made in Varnamo’ and ‘Bruno Mathsson Design Made in Sweden’.
