Designed by Florence Knoll in response to the lack of a similar seating solution being available in the contemporary furniture market. The simple and timeless aesthetic is a strictly modernist form, with minimal square section frame supporting a rectilinear outer structure and cushions within. The quilted cushions communicate comfort, and the seat depth and back angle of the Florence Knoll sofa suit both contract and domestic needs.

The design was and continues to be much copied, though the proportions and quality of the Florence Knoll original remain the benchmark.
